Courtney and I “met” each other in an online “November Moms” pregnancy group on Facebook when I was about 4 months pregnant with my little guy Mason and she was pregnant with her little guy Cruz. Fast-forward a couple of years later and Courtney joined my team as one of my coaches and she’s been an incredible inspiration ever since. Her weight-loss journey has been so inspiring! She’s now pregnant with her second baby and showcasing an amazing example of what a “fit pregnancy” looks like! Everyone, meet Courtney Caranguian!
Tell me a little about yourself! Family, interests, career, etc.
I was born in California but grew up in Hawaii since I was 6 years old. I’ve pretty much only known Oahu except for my yearly trips to Colorado to visit close friends and family. I am married, have one son, and a daughter on the way. A year ago I was a full-time teacher, but left teaching because my passion and belief in the educational system died. I now do Beachbody Coaching full-time! I also do Babywearing Consultancy and Nanny. I basically have a life and career filled with joy now. I love to hike, go to the beach, coach and play soccer, and not going to lie…..watch Teen Mom.
When did you begin your weight loss journey?
I began my journey in July 2014. I had gone back and forth using T25 and Hip Hop Abs, and continued to fall off track. Something clicked for me in July that has stuck with me since.
What inspired the change? Was there a moment when you thought to yourself “No more!”
The thing that inspired me to change was the fact that I was pre-diabetic. In my first pregnancy I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes, and even though I lost weight after pregnancy, I didn’t have healthy habits. I was at my heaviest at 190lbs, and I definitely said, NO MORE! So I took control, became a coach, and started to become accountable for myself.
Which programs did you use?
I have used a lot of the programs that Beachbody offers. I have successfully completed: 21 Day Fix, PiYo, Insanity Max 30, and Hammer and Chisel. Right now during my pregnancy I have been doing T25 and I am just about done with month one.
What were your results from each program?
After a round of 21 Day Fix and PiYo (81 days) I had lost 13lbs. I lost more weight continuing to use the 21 Day Fix meal plan. I then completed Insanity Max 30 and got to my pre-pre-pregnancy weight of 160lbs. Overall I have lost 30lbs, built more muscle, and become stronger. Hammer and Chisel is the program that really helped me get further into my journey in developing strength and abs!
Who has been the biggest support throughout your journey? Tell me a little about how they have helped you achieve your goals.
My biggest support has been my teammates. They push me when I’m down. They encourage me, they make me know I can continue and can kick ass doing my programs!! Being healthy is really not easy, so having a close support system (online or in person) is really important!
What’s been the biggest challenge for you? How did you overcome it? My biggest challenge so far has been being pregnant and trying to stay healthy. There are numerous times when I’ve wanted to just kill a bag of Cheetos or a piece of cake, but learning to control my will power has been challenging. I overcome things daily by drinking more water or just having an apple or carrots nearby. That way if I am hungry, I just eat a fruit or veggie.
Let’s face it. We all have those days when we’re tempted to throw in the towel. How do you stay on track?
I stay on track by: working out each day, drinking Shakeology, drinking tons of water, and listening to personal development books or the bible to continue being motivated. There’s definitely days I have sat on the couch and just been a potato. It happens. But I never let one bad day ruin the rest of my life.
Do you have a secret? A clean recipe that you couldn’t live without, or a favorite workout that makes you feel great?
I know the price of Shakeology can scare people. But to me Shakeology was a non-negotiable to reach my goals and continue being healthy. The price of losing control to diabetes would hurt me more than drinking a Shakeology everyday. I love Vanilla Shakeology: blend with peanut butter, half a banana, water, and ice!
Wala, you’ve got ice cream. It’s better to invest in your health then to invest in pills, etc. to live.
What advice can you give others just starting their journey?
My advice is to take your journey one day at a time, and when you say you’re going to do something, then do it. Don’t use anything as an excuse to reach your HEALTH goals. Your mindset shouldn’t be about how skinny you will become, or what size you are in clothes! You need to be focused on being healthy for a long awesome life.
